Welcome to SBS

The College of Social and Behavioral Sciences (SBS) focuses on the understanding of human beings, the groups they form, and the societies and cultures they create.

Our faculty research real world problems, ranging from homelessness in Tucson and food security in the Third World to the neurological causes of Alzheimer's disease and the preservation of Native American languages. We analyze the history of human society, thought, and culture from diverse academic perspectives. We address issues on the border between the United States and Mexico, as well as within the Greater Southwest. In addition to a focus on our region, we have ethnic and area studies programs focused on the study of Judaic language and culture, the Middle East and Latin America, the experiences of Mexican Americans, and the experiences of women. In short, we cover a great breadth of interesting areas in great depth!

The College of Social and Behavioral Sciences is the largest college at the University of Arizona. We have 23 distinct units; SBS has the most undergraduate majors (more than 6,000); SBS grants the most degrees (nearly 1,800); and SBS teaches the most students (more than 50 percent of Tier One general education courses). Our professors are committed to outstanding teaching and have won numerous teaching awards.

SBS has five departments ranked in the top 20 by the National Research Council (NRC): anthropology (5), philosophy (11), linguistics (12), sociology (14), and geography and regional development (19). The communication department has placed in the top 20 in three research areas in the recent National Communication Association (NCA) rankings. And several SBS departments and interdisciplinary programs in non-NRC ranked areas are well recognized in their fields as being among the best in the nation.
