The University of Arizona

Alumni and Development

Higher education helps produce the leaders of tomorrow, as well as discovering knowledge that can change the world.

The College of Social and Behavioral Sciences must rely upon private funds more than ever as state funding no longer suffices to provide the quality experience our students deserve.

Donating to the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences is making an investment in the future. Our goal is to match every potential donor with an area in SBS that speaks to their passion. A wide range of giving opportunities are available:

Supporting New Centers and Research Areas
Each department has areas of research for which they are seeking funds. For example, the psychology department continues to develop their Cognition and Neuroimaging Research Laboratory, which contributes to our understanding of the essential workings of the human brain and knowledge of diseases such as Alzheimer's. The Bureau of Applied Research in Anthropology is seeking funds for The Hopi Literacy Project. There are many more important projects that need funds.

Student Scholarships and Graduate Fellowships
Our desire to attract and effectively educate top students is a priority funding need. Donations can go towards scholarships, graduate fellowships, awards for outstanding achievements, internships, and improving writing support programs.

Donations can also go to providing travel experiences for students, especially those in our area studies, such as Latin American Studies and Near Eastern Studies. Travel is invaluable to the personal and professional development of our students; it strenghtens their language skills and facilitates their understanding of other countries and cultures.

Faculty Support
We need to continue to attract and retain the brightest and most productive faculty. We must keep our existing talent from being lured to other universities by offering competitive salaries and maintaining high-ranking departments.

Capital Projects and Building Projects
To meet our growth in units, faculty and students, the College needs modern laboratory and classroom space. Private support opportunities are available to donors at many levels and include naming opportunities for buildings, classrooms, laboratories and public spaces.

Endowments
An endowment is a permanent fund in which the principal is invested and only the annual interest income is used to support the endowment purpose. Endowments can be used to fund endowed professorships, a chair, lectureships, scholarship, etc.

Undesignated Gifts
Unrestricted gifts allow the Dean the discretion to direct funds to worthy projects at critical times. Funds from the Magellan Circle go to the Dean's Fund for Excellence.

Creating a Gift
You can speak to our development director about where your interests lie. Whether it is honoring a woman who has had a significant impact on your life in the Women's Plaza of Honor, or helping researchers find a cure for Alzheimer's, there is sure to be a project that speaks to your heart. The College can accept a variety of types of gifts, from cash, property, appreciated securities, or charitable trusts.
