Section VIII: Recommendations for P & T

• Like the section on outside letters, this section should be handled with strict confidentiality.
• When the dossier leaves the unit level, this section should include recommendations from the unit level committee on faculty status (peer review) and the recommendation from the unit head.
• In the case of a split vote, letter from that committee or level should detail the rationale for each the majority and the minority point of view.
• In the case of an abstention, please include in the letter a reason for the abstention.
• Because individuals at the unit level normally have the most in-depth information about a discipline and the activity valued at the unit level, these letters should provide some assessment of the candidate's record - in addition to the recommendation. The assessment should provide a context explaining the candidate's position in the discipline.
