John Messina is a research architect with the Southwest Center and the School of Architecture. He is also a member of the core faculty of the Latin American Studies program. Within the School of Architecture he teaches a General Education Elective, Trad 104, SONORA: A Description of Place in Arid America. He also offers a fourth year design studio on the imaginative re-use of existing buildings. His research concentrates on the architecture and urbanism of northwest Mexico, both historical and contemporary. Currently, he is the editor of a biennial architectural issue of the Journal of the Southwest. The first issue of this series (Vol.45, Numbers 1 and 2) has recently been published and is available in the University of Arizona library. John Messina is a registered architect and a member of the American Institute of Architects and the Vernacular Architectural Forum. He also has a one-person architectural practice in Tucson, Arizona where he concentrates on small neighborhood scale projects that allow for experimentation with the material and tectonic aspects of construction. A recent project, PerfHut (see below) was awarded a design citation by the Southern Arizona Chapter of the American Institute of Architects.
