The Secrets of Success

James E. Rogers has given the philosophy department the
largest gift in its history. The department, ranked 8th in the country, will use the funds to hire a senior scholar, helping it to fight “brain drain,” and pushing it forward in its quest for
excellence.

The pursuit of excellence is evident in Rogers’ life. He is a man who does an amazing number of things well. In addition to being chancellor and running his business, he has an extensive collection and knowledge of cars and a love of western folklore. He is also married, has three children and six grandchildren.

When asked how he balances all these responsibilities, Rogers replied, “We all do the things that we really want to do. You hear people say, ‘If I only had time to do this, that or the other.’ But the truth of the matter is that whatever we want to do, we can find time for it. I’ve never had a problem with that. And I keep a lot of things going at one time. I just love the excitement of something new. And I have this great fear of all of my stories being 30 years old…I like all my stories to be a day old.”

Rogers said that his particular career path has not been meticulously planned out: “I have never been very goal oriented. My feeling was I got up every day and did the best I could that day. Things seem to fall into place. They really do.”

Rogers Program in Law and Society

This is not the first time that Jim Rogers and the philosophy department have crossed paths. Rogers funds the Rogers Program in Law and Society at the Law School. This program focuses on social issues and public policy at points where law and other social and behavioral disciplines, such as philosophy, anthropology, psychology and sociology, intersect. It introduces law students to the ways in which lawyers must use those disciplines in grappling with issues of law and policy.
