Expectations and Structure of Friday Classes:
History 368 is an intensive course that will focus on
Colonial Mexico. In this course you will
develop your ability to analytically read primary and secondary sources. In addition to the readings, the written
assignments allow you to gain experience in constructing coherent, persuasive arguments
in a grammatically correct manner. The
Friday sections are designed to give you the opportunity to better comprehend
the weekly readings and lectures. To
accomplish this, we will hold discussions over the class materials, go over
terms that arise in the lectures and readings, and do activities that will
enhance your understanding of the history of colonial
Writing Assignments
There will be three, 3 page writing assignments over the course of the semester. For these papers, you will pick any two articles from the previous four weeks and write a 3 page analysis. I do not want a summary of the two articles. Rather, I want you to come up with your own thesis and persuasively argue your point using examples from the readings to back up your point. In the first Friday section, I provide examples of possible theses based on the first week’s readings.
The due dates for these writing assignments are as follows:
September 14th
October 5th
November 21st
In addition to the three, 3 pages writing assignments, there
will be several shorter assignments (shorter than a page) due at various times
during the semester.
