(Halle & Marantz pp. 111-138 (up to end of section 4)

Due: Thursday, January 27

1. Halle & Marantz propose the existence of what are now called ÔdissociatedÕ morphemes (see Harley & Noyer).

a. What is a dissociated morpheme? When are they inserted? (for a straight definition you have to go back & look at Harley and Noyer) (Answer: 1-2 sentences)

A morpheme that is not part of the syntax proper, it can be inserted after syntax but before Spell-out, e.g. [passive] or [case]. yes although these examples suck and I wish rolf & I had chosen others. The reason theyÕre in there is because of work that Dave Embick was doing at the time which argued that they were dissociated features in a particular case in a particular language -- not that they generally were dissociated everywhere.

b. On what page (in the first half of the paper) do H&M describe dissociated morphemes? (Answer: page #)

pg. 135  also 115

c. What kind of morpheme do H&M cite as an example of a dissociated morpheme? (Answer: 1 NP)
