HW 21

MORPHOLOGY

Jeongrae

1. What does ÔRealizationÕ mean?

In realizational morphology, the morphosyntactic representation with the specification of the lexical stem is the input to the morphological module, and this input uniquely determines which rules are to be used in producing the fully inflected word and in what sequence. So, a wordÕs association with certain morphosyntactic properties licenses the appropriate affixation, while structure-based models argues that morphosyntactic information gets added incrementally by the features of inflectional morphemes, as affixes are attached.

2. Give an instance from StumpÕs analysis in which the Elsewhere principle applies to a rule of referral, to bleed another fule of referral.

In dative, ablative and genitive forms of some Sanskrit nouns, there are two rules of referral; one is the ablative has the same form as the genitive in the singular, and the other is the ablative has the same form as the dative. Because the first rule is specifically applied to the ablative singular forms, the elsewhere condition predicts that the first rule overrides the second rule.

3. Stump proposes that rules of referral can be derived from/predicted by other rules of referral. How? What paradigm does he use to illustrate this effect?

In Bidirectional Referral Principle, if a rule of referral applies to a subset of forms within a given domain, the inverse applies to the remaining forms within the domain.
