535 Assignment 22: Spencer on Generalized Paradigm
Function morphology
Note: last time I checked in with SpencerÕs work, he had his own morphological framework, ÔWord-and-paradigmÕ theory. With the publication of StumpÕs book in 2001 (ÒInflectional Morhpology), it seems like heÕs coalesced into the PFM model, which may therefore be gathering steam. It would be nice if morphologists could continue coalesce somewhat, and then people working on similar problems wouldnÕt be talking quite so much at cross-purposes all the time...
This paper is just a draft & has a few typos etc. in it. If you wish, you could keep track of them as part of your assignment, with page & line #s, and we could send our proofreading (and any substantive comments) to Spencer as a collective friendly gesture.
1. What does Ôextended exponenceÕ mean?
2. What pre-insertion DM operation closely corresponds to the notion of Ôportmanteau rule blockÕ in PFM?
3. In StumpÕs formulation of a derivational paradigm, as described by Spencer, what is the main difference between derivational morphology and inflectional morphology? That is, what additional thing(s) (can) happen when a derivational PF applies to a stem that donÕt happen when an inflectional PF applies to a stem? (one or two sentences max)
4. Spencer assumes that a representation of a lexical item involves 4 components, and that a PF can alter any or all of those components. What are the 4 components? Which component(s) is(are) altered in Ôpure inflectionÕ cases? Which component(s) is(are) altered in Ôpure derivationÕ cases?
