535 Assignment 12
Hagstrom, Korean ha, ko and negation
Due: Thurs, Feb. 26
(Sorry, this is an evil question:)
Draw a complete tree for example 22 in Hagstrom's paper, according to
his analysis. Show all movements.
Assume that nominalizing morphemes head a phrasal projection nP that
does not have a specifier position.
Remember that Hagstrom follows Yi in analysing the ko-marked clause as
an adjunct, rather than a coordination; assume that it is adjoined to
the main TP.
Do not attempt to include vP in your tree (unless you *really* want
to); a regular VP with the subject base-generated in its specifier will
do as shorthand for now. Remember that the subject has to move to
Spec-TP.
Remember that to get the word order right, objects (including
nominalized VPs) have to move to some specifier position to the
left of negation. Assume that this is ObjP, as I drew in my handout for
Bobaljik, and that it immediately dominates Hagstrom's NegP.
Remember that ha and ko are realizing terminal nodes
that are inserted postsyntactically, and do not themselves project any
phrasal structure; indicate this by drawing them in bold or (if you're
drawing by hand) in a different color pen.
