SBS Homecoming

Homecoming Fall 2004!

This past year, we celebrated homecoming with our alumni, both at our homecoming tent on the UA mall and at The Shanty, a fun Tucson pub.

We had many people stop by our tent, which was twice the size of last year’s, and it still wasn’t large enough to accommodate all of our units!

Our tent had professors and students, department handouts, prize drawings, a book sale, and delicious empanadas from Mamma Llama’s in Tucson.

Our annual bash at The Shanty, hosted by alumnus Bill Nugent, was also a lot of fun!

Our homecoming chair and speaker this year was Patty Weiss, a journalism alumna. Patty was the first woman evening newscaster in the state of Arizona. She has been an anchor for KVOA since 1975. She received her degree, cum laude, with honors in journalism, and minors in political science and economics. Patty is involved in a variety of community organizations. She serves on the advisory boards of the journalism department, the psychiatry department, UApresents and the Institute for Children, Youth and Families.

Our student speaker was Jennifer Lum, a senior with a major in political science and a minor in journalism. She has a 3.9 GPA. Jennifer serves as president of Pi Sigma Apha, UA’s political science honorary, which was awarded best chapter of the year from 2003-2004.

We would love for you to join us next year at our homecoming events! If you would like more information, please contact Edna Meza Aguirre, our associate director of development, at 520-621-3454, ema1@u.arizona.edu.

To thank psychology alumnus Bill Nugent for his years of support to SBS, Al Kaszniak, head of psychology, announced the creation of the William Owen Nugent Scholarship, which will be used to help undergraduates in the department. Nugent is a member of our advisory board and has hosted our Shanty event for the past four years.

Patty Weiss had joked on the news that she had always wanted to be homecoming queen, but being homecoming chair would do. Here, Jim Shockey, associate dean of SBS, presents Patty with a tiara.
