Giving Ways

• In an estate gift, Bazy Tankersley has generously donated her home, which will be used to create a visiting scholars center managed by the Southwest Center. The Center, which will be called La Busqueda, will be used by the entire University of Arizona community who do borderlands research.

• Al Kaszniak, head of the psychology department, recently announced the creation of the William Owen Nugent Scholarship, which will be used to help deserving undergraduates. The scholarship was created to recognize and thank Nugent, a psychology alumnus and owner of The Shanty, who has supported SBS over the years by serving as an SBS board member and hosting our annual homecoming bash at his Tucson pub.

• The Division for Late Medieval and Reformation Studies has received outstanding news that a benefactor who wishes to remain anonymous will match gifts to the Oberman Library/Chair made between Dec. 1, 2004, and Dec. 31, 2006, to an aggregate maximum of $300,000. Although the amount still to be raised toward the complete endowment is $1.4 million, this generous offer will hopefully encourage additional giving in the next two years. To learn more about the Library, you can read the feature article from the last issue of SBS Developments at: http://bandura.sbs.arizona.edu/development/oberman/oberman.html.

• UA President Peter Likins will honor Saundra Taylor, senior VP for Campus Life, with a lighting fixture in the Women’s Plaza of Honor, a place on the UA campus to permanently and publicly recognize the significant women in our lives.

• Steve Lynn gave the lead gift for an endowed scholarship to honor retiring Communication Professor David Williams. Although he did not know Williams very well, Lynn received his master’s degree in communication from the UA and credits his university education for his current success. Lynn is vice president of communications and government relations for both UniSource Energy Corporation and Tucson Electric Power Company, and is also active in the Tucson and University communities.

• A. Richard Diebold, Jr., Ph.D, and his Salus Mundi Foundation have donated $1,020,000 to the Department of Anthropology. Approximately $830,000 of the funds will be used to establish the Je Tsongkhapa Endowment for Central and Inner Asian Archaeology. The remaining money will be used to initiate two new UA professorships: one in medical anthropology and another in sociocultural anthropology.
