The Distinguished
Lecture Series:
Bringing Research
to the Community

Al Kaszniak, head of psychology, was our distinguished speaker in October. He spoke on the contributions of his own and others’ research on understanding how thought, emotion and experience are affected in Alzheimer’s disease, and the relevance of this research to the clinical care of persons afflicted with this distressingly prevalent illness. Kaszniak won the 2004 Henry and Phyllis Koffler Prize for Outreach and Public Service for his research on Alzheimer’s.

The Distinguished Lecture Series has become its own institution. Every month, we see regular attendees who understand what a unique event this is: They enjoy a wonderful lunch at the stunning Arizona Inn, interact with others in attendance who share their love of learning, and hear the most prominent scholars in the Colleges of SBS, Humanities, and Science discuss their research.

Started in 1993, the Distinguished Lecture Series originally featured scholars from the Colleges of Social and Behavioral Sciences and Humanities. Science joined the group last year.

A presentation starts when dessert is served and last around 30-45 minutes. Afterwards, the professor answers questions from the group.

Last year’s speakers from SBS were: Jacqueline Sharkey, head of journalism, who spoke about the news coverage of the war in Iraq; Ed Donnerstein, dean of SBS, who spoke on the role of mass media in children’s aggression; and Jake Harwood, professor of communication, who spoke on aging and communication.

The 2004-2005 SBS presenters are equally impressive: Al Kaszniak, head of psychology, spoke on Oct. 13 on “Neuropsychology of Alzheimer’s: Memory, Emotion and Awareness.” Michael Hammond, head of linguistics, spoke on Feb. 16 about “Dirty Words, Pig Latin, and the Structure of Language.” And on July 13, Stephen Yool, professor of geography and regional development, will speak on “Mapping Fire Hazards from Space.”

The cost for the lunch and presentation is $23. If you would like more information, please contact Ginny Healy at 520-621-3938. For a full listing of all three colleges’ speakers, visit: http://coh.arizona.edu/COH/CALENDAR/lectureseries/f04/.
