Message from Dean Donnerstein

Welcome to the third issue of SBS Developments.

I have written in past issues about how public universities are now being called upon to operate more like private institutions. The current issue gives several examples of how this public-private partnership is working for the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences. This includes the incredible support the community and Tucson philanthropists the Bakers and the Diamonds have given to our Judaic Studies program; how a gift from successful UA alumnus James E. Rogers is helping us fight “brain drain” in our top-ranked philosophy department; the important role of corporate giving in our fundraising diversification; and how funds from our Magellan Circle have allowed us to award scholarships to deserving students.

Most of our donors give because they feel a sense of connection to what we are
doing in our College. We know that some of you may not feel a part of SBS, perhaps because it was called the College of Liberal Arts when you attended, or because we just seem too big to provide a meaningful identity.

But we’re trying to change that. We’re reaching out to our alumni through publications such as this, through events at homecoming, and through an upcoming new and improved website that includes press releases on research findings and listings of SBS events.

And when you give to the College of SBS or give directly to your SBS department, we thank you. Because it is this team effort, this public-private partnership, that will allow us to make new discoveries and to keep education excellent and accessible for future generations.

Sincerely,

Edward Donnerstein, Dean
